Photographing artwork of Abi Spendlove

Abi Spendlove is an artist based in Luton who I got to know really well over the last half a year whilst collaborating on a couple of projects. She creates art using unusual materials and this time I photographed her work completed with water and ink. Below are a couple of photos from the day of shooting those pieces.

Let there be light!

As Abi’s artwork interacts with light, we chose a bright space that gets lots of sunshine through the windows (on a good day in the UK). I used natural light to capture the reflections on the floor.

As the light changed a lot, we had very little time to capture the effect of light on the artwork. My worry was that it might be difficult to translate what I see with my eyes to the image, but I’m pleased with the results and love the way light superimposed onto the floor.

Studio setup

Once I finished shooting the glass pieces, we moved to the studio where I took photos for Abi’s portfolio. I used large softbox to light the pieces hung on the wall. As the photos are used for showcasing and not for printing, we enjoyed the presence of the shadows casted on the walls which helped bringing a bit of context of where the pieces are and what textures/wrinkles there are.
